Compare the test, not just the box
FIT looks for hidden blood. Other stool tests can combine blood testing with additional markers. They are not interchangeable, and the interval depends on the test and your screening plan.
Before ordering a product
- Is it intended for someone with my history?
- Do I need a clinician’s order, and is it covered?
- Who receives and explains the result?
- Who arranges follow-up colonoscopy if needed?
- When will I repeat testing?
Follow-up matters
An abnormal result generally needs a colonoscopy. A negative result does not replace medical evaluation of symptoms. Do not use a kit to postpone a conversation about a change you have noticed.
An example you may hear about
Cologuard Plus is a prescription stool-based screening product for adults 45 and older at average risk. A clinician must decide whether it is appropriate; an abnormal result requires follow-up colonoscopy. This is an example, not an endorsement or a complete list. Confirm current eligibility, ordering, and coverage with the provider.
Our product approach
We explain categories instead of ranking brands by commission. Future comparisons should identify intended use, evidence, limitations, ordering requirements, total cost, and commercial relationships.
This is general education for U.S. readers, not a diagnosis or a personal screening plan. Talk with your clinician about your own history and symptoms. Follow your clinic’s instructions.
