A public conversation about a private subject

The Colorectal Cancer Alliance reported James Van Der Beek’s death at 48 on February 11, 2026, following colorectal cancer. In its tribute, the organisation recognised his openness and advocacy, including sharing his diagnosis through The Real Full Monty in 2024.

His story is a reason to make space for a conversation about colorectal health. It cannot tell us what would have changed an individual outcome, and it should not be used to make assumptions about someone else’s symptoms or risk.

Let the conversation become a question

You could begin your next appointment with: “Can we talk about my colorectal screening plan?” If a family member has had colorectal cancer or polyps, bring that history. If you have symptoms, describe them directly and ask about evaluation.

Our guides explain the distinction between screening and symptom evaluation, and help you organise questions for a clinician.
